About Headless Horseman:
This mysterious producer has been cementing his place as one of the most exciting live acts in techno. Shrouded in secrecy, the eponymous Headless releases pretty much sum up the modus operandi of this artist: dark, raw, and rhythmic IDM-flavoured techno. The recent hardware-only live sets at Berghain and Boiler Room Berlin have undoubtedly showcased the Horseman’s skills as a producer. Rest assured, the sword is sharpened and ready to slay the masses.

The House of Subversive presents // Honey Soundystem // featuring Josh Cheon // Jackie House

This Pride Sunday, August 2nd 2015… The House of Subversive is proud to present: Honey Soundsystem featuring Josh Cheon and Jackie House.

Honey Soundsystem is a San Francisco based collective of four. Jacob Sperber, Jason Kendig, Robert Yang and Josh Cheon came together inspired by pivotal gay underground parties and dance music history, who offered a take on dance music in direct opposition to what was blaring on mainstream club speakers. They bond over a shared love of timeless sounds, iconic imagery, the complete look, indulgent behavior, and most of all, attractive men. :) The boys dedicate time and passion into archivist work, which resulted in unearthing the lost gay porn soundtracks of San Francisco’s Hi-NRG producer Patrick Cowley released on Honey’s flagship HNYTRX and Cheon’s Dark Entries. Honey boys have their fingers in the world of music production, remixing and DJing parties around the world.

Starting off the night is the incredible and quirky skills and stylings of Midnight Vulture, whose vinyl collection and selections never cease to inspire, surpise and amaze Vancouver’s hottest underground events.

Proper sound at the amazing NEW Beaumont Studios too by Alex Rakhit. (if you’ve not been, THIS is your chance!) Rev up your dancing runners and squeeze into that speedo boys and girls. This is gonna get hot.

About Move D:

If talent converted into record sales, David Moufang would be a very rich man. His records with partner Jonas Grossmann as Deep Space Network and his own solo releases as Move D are among the furthest outreaches of techno’s push towards the stars.

Moufang grew up in Heidelberg listening to his parents’ collection of early Pink Floyd and Kraftwerk records but the most overwhelming influence on his childhood was outer space, the result of a trip to the cinema with his father to see 2001: A Space Odyssey.

By the age of 12, he started playing drums (he eventually went on to study classical percussion) and took up the guitar a few years later, this time taking lessons from two separate jazz guitar teachers. He played guitar in a band called Rivers & Trains well into the ‘90s. Occasionally he even plied his trade as a DJ, spinning electro, funk and jazz.

It wasn’t until 1989 that he discovered techno when a friend of his, D-Man, invited him to a club he was running in the industrial suburb of Mannheim. Through D-Man, he met Redagain P who converted Moufang’s nickname “Mufti” into the more kinetic Move D

One of the fascinating creatures that our Planet houses is the ever-elusive Sassmouth. As of her ‘god particle’ label launch in early 2013, and ‘Planet Chicago’ club night launch at the legendary ‘Smartbar’ in early 2014 where she continues her Chicago residency, one can say that she is quite simply the inimitable nature/wildlife/DJ/producer. Following the similarly paramount achievement of being enlisted as a resident for the San Francisco based ‘As You Like It’ production group in early 2013, this colossal cephalopod continued to so sensibly organize each and every impromptu mix whilst covering specific genre regions and/or habitats (deep oceans, techno, Great Lakes, house, shallow seas, electro, urban rivers, experimental, etc.) until the entire Planet was magnificently represented by the most astonishing sounds you’ve ever experienced from the comforts of home, club, or NBFC underground party

Erika (Live) (Ectomorph, Interdimensional Transmissions – Detroit // Sone (0-1 – Seattle)// Jak(Subsensory – Portland)

Featuring from across the border:

Erika (Ectomorph · Interdimensional Transmissions · Detroit) – LIVE SET

Erika dreams on the cellular level, or perhaps of transdimensional intelligences moving through strange patterns on celestial objects, working towards a mysterious goal. Her connection to the dreamworld becomes concrete in her approach to music, simultaneously so solid and yet so ethereal. Erika still finds time to accomplish many things in her waking hours, such as being a member of Ectomorph, co-conspirator of Detroit’s Interdimensional Transmissions record label, DJing with vinyl, making music with her pet machines, and running erika.net – a freeform streaming radio station. Erika.net celebrates its 14th year this year, being one of the very first iTunes presets. From 1993 through 1999, Erika was very involved in WCBN in Ann Arbor, as a freeform and jazz DJ, and Program Director.

The daughter of a famed scientist and already running a well known BBS from her bedroom by the time she was 13, Erika is no stranger to expressing her ideas through technology. In 1997 she was handed a TR-606 and asked to join Ectomorph, and has since become an electronic musician of the highest order, focusing on analog synthesis, with live hardware sequencing that allows transformation over time and a deep depth of tone.

The release of her debut solo double album Hexagon Cloud has been very well-received, and her all-hardware live PA was one of the highlights of the Made in Detroit stage at last year’s Movement festival.

JAK (SubSensory · Subspec · Portland) – DJ SET

Over the past few years, U.S. DJ/producer Jack Coleman aka JAK has seen his profile steadily rising with releases on respected labels such as Trapez, Torque, Slap Jaxx, Fade Records, Illegal Alien, Subspec, and his own label SubSensory Recordings.

Jack’s original tracks and remixes have hit the top 50 sales charts on leading outlets. His tunes have been remixed by the likes of Mark Broom, Bryan Zentz, Audio Injection, Adam Jay, Raiz, and Angel Alanis. His 2014 “Cyclo Drive” release on the widely recognized Trapez label propelled JAK’s music to a broader global audience. And, Jack’s own label, SubSensory Recordings, boasts 70+ releases and continues to earn plays by many of techno’s biggest DJs.

While Jack has considerable studio experience, he’s always been a DJ first and foremost, starting as a three turntable vinyl DJ in the 90’s and continuing to hone his craft. He’s headlined events in Tokyo, Osaka, Santiago de Chile, Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and LA, and has shared billings with the likes of Claude Young, DVS1, John Tejada, Truncate, Angel Alanis, Bryan Zentz and Luis Flores. Jack’s dj sets have also been highlighted on popular techno podcast series including Droid Behavior’s D-Node Podcast, Detroit-based podcasts from Blank Code and Dystopian Rhythm, and the Torque Podcast from Japan.

Sone (From 0-1 · Subspec · Seattle) – DJ SET

Sone is Seattle based DJ and Producer Brian Sonnleitner. His first exploits into music was being immersed in the underground punk scene growing up in Wisconsin during the 90’s. Then late one August evening, after witnessing Chris Liberator melt his mind, Brian shifted gears into pursuing his passion for techno full time. Sone is now a DJ of over a decade, his sets are stuffed full of tension ranging between the deep and dark to heavy big room sounds but, without fail, maintaining the element of the dance floor. While keeping his philosophy of “the best techno is simple and effective”.
2008 brought Brian into the realm of production with his tracks exploring the bigger and darker side of techno. His original productions and remixes appear on his home label, From 0-1, which he runs with long time friend and cohort Milkplant, Slant Records, Audio Autopsy, and Subspec to name a few. His remix contest for the track “Recovery Mode”, released on From 0-1, received far reaching interest and support with submissions coming in from all over North America and Europe. One of Seattle’s brightest up-and-comers, the years ahead will surely see his impact on the Northwest and beyond.)

DJ and producer Annie Hall has been steadily carving a name for herself as an artist who delivers diverse, solid sets and music. Born and raised in Spain, Annie started her life as a DJ in 2003 and began producing in 2005. She has released on labels such as Blank Code, Flash Recordings, Semantica Records, Minnuendo, D1 Recordings and Detroit Underground Recordings. Her DJ sets draw inspiration from the complex landscapes of ruin and hope that characterize the Motor City. Join us for a 2-room party with Downwards label head Regis, Minimal Wave founder Veronica Vasicka, and a varied host of special local talent.

In the Cabaret:

Karl O’Connor is most certainly Regis and it is also highly probable that he propagates other pseudonyms. This has only added to the greater mythology surrounding the influential Downwards label that he has run with fellow art terrorist Peter Sutton (Female) since 1993. Unconventional and single-minded to say the least (what label can boast a back catalogue free of the industry standard cash cow remix) by decentralising the focus on the DJ/producer personality, he remains one of the more highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene. Degenerate art indeed.

Veronica Vasicka
Founded by DJ and East Village Radio host Veronica Vasicka in 2005, New York-based label Minimal Wave has done the invaluable work of historical recovery, unearthing an entire subgenre for a new generation. Emerging from the brief postpunk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and created by like-minded musicians in home studios scattered across Europe, Minimal Wave found the impulses of the early avant-gardes reanimated with help of analog synths. Along with the techno-leaning offshoot Cititrax, Vasicka has helped to generate a network for minimal and synth wave enthusiasts and promote electronic music via an online archive and high-quality vinyl releases.

Scott W.
Local legend of many talents, Scott W. is a mainstay in Vancouver’s underground music scene, and one of the best music selectors our city has to offer.

Subversive presents: Joey Anderson

JAY TRIPWIRE (Tonality, Poker Flat)
CALEB FOX (Subversive, Royal City)

JOEY ANDERSON (Dekmantel, Inimeg Recordings, Strength Music)

Hoboken, New Jersey native Joey Anderson launched his label Inimeg Recordings in early 2011. His first release on the label Organisms, featuring longtime comrade DJ Qu garnered a welcoming response from media outlets across the globe including RA and Concepto Radio. Anderson’s previously released tracks Dive Deep, Thee Analysis and Oval alongside his Exchange Place crew ignited an interest that is continuing to burgeon. With deep roots in the underground House Music scene of New York City as a masterful dancer, Joey Anderson’s evolution to producer, DJ and label owner were almost inevitable. His latest release We Are Not Alone with industry fav Jus-ED is a strong cohesive follow up to his premiere release. Moody vibes juxtaposing intergalactic intonations mixed with deep rhythmic consciousness, encompass Anderson’s sound.

Anderson’s recent sets at Dekmantel festival, Boiler Room and the highly coveted Free Rotation festival in London, won him widespread critical praise. With a steady stream of dark, shadowy and deep techno and house EPs on labels like Latency, Inimeg and Syncrophone, and Dekmantel, his studio work and collaborations are forging his signature soundscape. This is music for the mind, body, and soul. and you will DANCE!

JAY TRIPWIRE (Tonality, Poker Flat)

Always sitting slightly off-centre, Jay Tripwire is an artist that walks the line as industry staple and ever changing innovator, releasing one standout release after another. His signature fusion of deep Detroit textures and intricate rhythms has led a career spanning two decades, with over 200 releases and four full length albums. He remains one of the most prolific artists around, with 18 EP’s and a whole host of remixes for labels including Tonality, Pokerflat, 1Trax, Baker Street, Deep Data, SOCO Audio and System.
Detroit inspired textures to modern European house and tech house fusions, blurring genrefication. This follows releases on the label under his 8Channels name – a project that melds basic channel, soul and dub into a new hybrid soundscape of techno, deep house and dub. The moniker also appears on other highly regarded labels such as Ransom Note, Conya, NRK, Cinematic and Hallucination.
Whilst the term ‘legendary’ is often bandied about with little thought, in Jay’s case we could say just that – his personal arsenal of re-edits and comfort in arranging extended DJ sets lasting eight hours or more certainly demonstrates a talent that deviates from standard fare. Jay also still supports, buys and plays vinyl, and actively seeks out records to play at gigs, when Tripwire is on the decks he plays a vinyl CD set that contains no laptop djing. Jay’s work has been featured on numerous compilations, notably from Cocoon, Fabric, Renaissance, Journeys by DJ, Ultra & Bedrock, and is supported by a diverse spectrum of dance culture from house luminaries such as Doc Martin and Kerri Chandler to techno legends Steve Bug and Laurent Garnier. Instrumental in the formation of the Subversive crew, and skilled at moving dancefloors around the world, we are honoured have him play for us.

CALEB FOX (Subversive, Royal City)
Caleb Fox plays dope music. You may have been lucky enough to catch him behind the decks deep in the Vancouver underground. If so, you will have heard his mad skillz and exquisite selections. If not… this is your chance! Come early. Have a beverage, and dance like you own the floor!

Subversive presents: Matrixxman

Resurgent Techno Atavism

In the Cartesian view of identity, the body is a container for our mind, personality and ultimately our soul. But what happens when technology allows us to transcend the limitations of physical reality as we know it? In a post-corporeal life, our bodies may no longer be confined to the rather cumbersome form of a human but instead a vast digital network. Matrixxman happens to be a proponent of this possibility. When he is not preoccupied envisioning the emergence of myriad artificial intelligence entities and endless virtual worlds within worlds, he also enjoys composing music. The essence of which is crafting new interpretations of something straddling the grey area between classic Chicago house and Detroit techno. “Resurgent techno atavism” as he prefers to call it.

In 2013, Matrixxman’s debut EP “The XX Files” received critical acclaim, garnering praise from the likes of The Fader, Pitchfork, XLR8R and Fact Magazine. His relentless rhythm tracks like “Protocol” have been supported and played by a who’s who of dope underground elite including Levon Vincent, Len Faki, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, San Soda, Boddika, Pfirter, etc. Meanwhile on the house side of things, various tunes of his have been rinsed by tastemakers such as Larry Heard, Joey Anderson, DVS1, HNNY, Huerco S and Seth Troxler, to name a few. Together with comrade Vin Sol, he runs the label Soo Wavey based out of San Francisco

Subversive is proud to bring the fresh sounds of Matrixxman to our favourite people! YOU!

With a stellar line-up that includes two of Vancouver’s own
underground legends (Max Ulis and Nancy Dru) you had best wear your dancing shoes! This is going to be all kinds of fun!

Subversive presents: Daniel Bell (Accelerate, Detroit)

Austin Phillips

visuals by: Pixelwrangler

The Subversive crew is honoured to welcome a true musical hero of ours back to Vancouver! The incomparable Daniel Bell! Absorbing influences of Chicago and avant garde minimalism Daniel Bell took it upon himself to create a sound that changed the course of electronic music. A reaction to the rave music of the time, where over the top stage shows and style had started to reign over substance, Bell looked back to the finer elements in sound and composition to produce what became to be known as, minimal techno. For some the phrase is a pair of dirty words, but tune in to the work he released under the DBX moniker and you’ll be hip to what the true sound of the genre was formed on; a solid, maddening level of groove.

Since his early days as a producer and part of the burgeoning empire of Hawtin’s Plus 8 label, Bell has gone on to play roles both on and off stage. Whether that was from his studio, imparting a new sound on the techno world with 1994’s ‘Losing Control’ or from his business role, behind the formation of some of the most influential labels in electronic music’s history. With both Shake’s Frictional and Dopplereffekt’s Dataphysix imprints – Bell sent shockwaves through the system and he’s been at the heart of some of the most exciting and influential music in electronic history.
